What We Do:

  • Birth control counseling with most kinds of birth control available
  • Pregnancy testing and counseling
  • Sexually Transmitted Disease testing and counseling (with treatment as needed)
  • HIV testing and counseling
  • Testing and treatment of vaginal and bladder infections
  • Counseling on teen's health (referrals given when needed)

Anything you say about sex, drugs, and feelings is CONFIDENTIAL unless you give us permission to share it.

But, if you tell us:

  • You are being abused (physically and/or sexually)
  • You are going to hurt yourself or someone else
  • You are 13 or under and having sex
  • You are are under 16 and having sex with someone 18 years or older
We must contact someone to help.

Your health care at the Washoe County Health District's Teen Health Mall is voluntary and confidential. This means that you are here because you have chosen to be here. It also means that no information will be given out about you without your written permission except as required by law or to provide services to you in compliance with Federal Privacy and Security Standards.

Please note that because of Nevada Law:

  • We must report Statutory Sexual Seduction. This means that if you are 15 years of age or younger and are having sex with someone 18 years of age or older and you tell us, we must report it to law enforcement.
  • We must report lewdness (sex) with a child under the age of 14. This means that if you are under the age of 14 and having sex we will have to report this to Child Protective Services.
  • We must report Child Abuse and Neglect. This means that if we have cause to believe that there is any kind of of abuse or neglect of a minor occurring, we must report it to law enforcement.
  • We must report some types of sexually transmitted diseases (STDs): Some types of STDs and testing will be reported (not your name) for statistical information. In some cases, a clinic nurse may call and ask you to provide information about people with whom you had sex in order to provide them with testing and treatment to limit the spread of STDs.

Cost Of Services

General Information About Fees:

  • Collecting money for clinic services is important to keeping our clinic running.
  • We ask that you pay all or part of your bill at each clinic visit.
  • Donations are always accepted.
  • Fees are based on your income, so staff will be asking for this information.


  • We do bill some insurance plans.
  • We accept some types of Medicaid. Please tell us about your Medicaid when scheduling an appointment.

Low Cost Services:

  • Our services are for individuals that don't have a lot of money.
  • We provide quality care while keeping the cost of services low.
  • Medications and methods will be provided at your visit to decrease barriers to care.

Costs By Age:

17 Years Of Age Or Younger:

  • The cost of of your visit to the clinic is based on your income.
  • If you are working full-time there will be a fee for your visit; however, you can make payments (you don't have to pay it in full the day of your visit).
  • If you are not working, or are working part-time, in most cases you won't receive a bill.
  • If your family is aware, the fees may be based on household income and insurance plans may be billed.
  • Fees and donations help us to keep our clinic running.

18 - 19 Years Of Age:

  • The cost of the visit is based on your household income (or the amount of money earned by everyone in your household). Depending on your household income you may receive a discount in fees.
  • If someone is supporting you (family, boyfriend, husband or wife) we ask for household income and proof of that income (paycheck stubs, W-2 form, Income Tax Returns or verification letters).
  • The average cost of a new visit is $60 and $50 for an annual exam.
  • Fees and donations help us to keep our clinic running.

What To Expect

  • All services provided at the Teen Health Mall program are provided by Advanced Practitioners of Nursing and are confidential.
  • You will be completing paperwork and may get an exam.
  • Routine exams include height, weight, blood pressure, hemoglobin (iron test), breast exam and Pap smear (in some cases) and a review of your new or current client information and information on birth control choices.

Postpartum Clients:

  • If you have a normal postpartum check-up within 3 months of your appointment at our clinic you may not need another exam. You will need to bring two things with you to your first appointment at our clinic:
    1. a copy of your 6 week postpartum exam and
    2. a copy of your Pap smear results from the physician or clinic where you received your exam.
  • If you have not received your postpartum check-up or if it has been more than 3 months, an exam will be necessary at the time of your visit to our program.

Birth control methods in this program are:

  • Birth control pills (The Pill)
  • The "Minipill"
  • Emergency contraception pill
  • Depo-Provera (The Shot)
  • ParaGard IUD
  • Mirena IUD
  • Diaphragm
  • Natural family planning (Rhythm method)
  • Condoms and foam
  • Spermicidal gels and suppositories
  • Nexplanon

Yes. We have staff that speak Spanish and interpret in the clinic. We also have a telephone interpreting service that can assist with interpretation in many other languages.
  • We provide pregnancy testing and proof of pregnancy if your test is positive. We do not provide prenatal care services: however, we will tell you where to receive those services.
  • The Washoe Pregnancy Center provides prenatal care services on a sliding scale. Their phone number is (775) 982-5640.
If you take an Emergency Contraception (the Plan B pill) within 5 days of unprotected sex you can reduce your chance of pregnancy by 75%. You need to be seen by a nurse to receive this medication. Call the clinic ASAP to make an appointment. For weekend, holiday or evening Emergency Contraception providers in the local area dial 1-888-NOT-2-LATE

Yes. There are Citifare bus stops close to the Health Department along routes 2 and 12.

Contact Sexual Assault Support Services Crisis Call Center at 784-8090 or 1-800-992-5757 and they will listen to you as well as give you information about resources in the community that may help.
  • If it is your first visit, or if your income has changed, please bring proof of family income. Please see Cost of Services.
  • If you are on medications, bring in your medications, or write down the names so a nurse can review them. This would also include any birth control pills that you did not receive from this clinic.
The Teen Health Mall offers family planning services to help you plan the size of your family. By using birth control methods a woman has more control over when she has children and how many children she has.
A Pap Smear is a test that looks for changes of the cells on the cervix. If you would like to know more, please see the Pap Smear information sheet.
The number to the office clinic is (775) 328-2470. The phones are answered between the hours of 9am - 12pm and 1pm - 4pm.
  • You will fill out paperwork.
  • An aide will obtain your weight and height, measure your blood pressure, and check your iron level (in some cases).
  • The Advanced Practitioner of Nursing will review your medical history and determine what services you need (birth control, STD testing etc.).
  • If you are interested in birth control you may get it on the day of your visit; however, in some instances you will need to return to receive your method of birth control.
  • You may or may not receive a pelvic exam (having a nurse look and feel inside your vagina) and Pap smear on your first visit. If you receive birth control you will need to have a pelvic exam within 3 months.
You can pay for your visit on the day that you receive services, or we can put you on a payment plan.

The Health Department is located at the corner of 9th Street and Wells Ave., just off the freeway and next to the fairgrounds. The address is 1001 East 9th Street. If you are traveling North on Wells, the entrance to the clinic is the first right (into the parking lot) after passing 9th Street. You can enter the door marked clinic services.
