Is Washoe County Tobacco-Free?

  • 19.8% of adults in Washoe County were current smokers in 2011-2012 (Nevada Division of Public and Behavioral Health).
  • 43.7% of cancers in Washoe County in 2006-2010 were tobacco-related (Nevada Division of Public and Behavioral Health).
  • The majority of adults (82%) have made their homes smoke-free (Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System, 2006)
  • The majority of high school students (85.7%) do not currently use tobacco products (Youth Risk Behavior Survey, 2013)

The following data was compiled from the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS). The BRFSS is a national survey developed by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and is considered the standard for determining rates of tobacco use and other behaviors.

Washoe County smoking rates have been dropping for nearly a decade. For two years in a row, smoking rates in Washoe County were lower than rates for Nevada and the nation.
