MRC Core Competencies

The National Medical Reserve Corps program has developed a set of Core Competencies which represent the base level of knowledge and skills necessary for MRC volunteers.

Upon completion of Medical Reserve Corps orientation and required training, members should be able to:

  • Describe the procedures and steps necessary to protect the health, safety, and overall well-being of themselves, their families, their team, and their community
  • Describe the impact of an event on the mental health of themselves and their family, team, and others
  • Describe their communication role(s) and processes with response partners, media, general public, and others
  • Demonstrate the ability to follow procedures for assignment, activation, reporting, and deactivation
  • Describe chain of command (Incident Command System, National Incident Management System, Emergency Management Systems, MRC), and its application to a given incident
  • Identify limits to their own skills, knowledge, and abilities as they pertain to their role as an MRC member
  • Describe the role of the local MRC unit in public health and/or emergency response and its application to a given incident
