The Washoe County Learning Center proudly presents Excellence in Public Service Certificate Programs. Washoe County encourages lifelong learning and the professional development of all employees.  Excellence in Public Service is a series of certificate programs that recognizes successful completion of essential employee development courses.

The certificate programs are: 


Promote Yourself! Mini Certificate Program

This mini certificate program was designed to help you improve your skills, enabling you with knowledge and tools that will assist you in the County's hiring process.  This is your chance to learn the valuable skill of promoting yourself! The program includes 5 courses totaling 18 hours.

  • Acing The Interview (3 hrs)
  • Career Development (6 hrs)
  • Making Connections (3 hrs)
  • Understanding the Merit System (2 hrs)
  • Writing a Resume (4 hrs)

 Essentials of High Performing Teams Program

This series defines and encourages high performing teams and outlines techniques to effectively drive continuous process improvements. The program includes 8 courses totaling 47 1/2 hours.

  • Continuous Process Improvement in Practice (2 hrs)
  • Healthy Team Dynamics (4 hrs)
  • Managing Change (4 hrs)
  • Meeting Management (4 hrs)

  • Project Management (7 hrs)

Essentials of Management Development Program

Excellent managers and supervisors are key to the successful implementation of Washoe County programs.  This series offers all levels of County management the critical knowledge and skills to create a healthy productive work environment and to manage performance skillfully.  Eight essential courses and 50 1/2 hours of learning! 

Prerequisites:  Must be supervisor level or above.  Non-management employees may only take these courses with an approved Washoe County Individual Development Plan (IDP).

  • MGT - Defensible Hiring (6 1/2 hrs)
  • MGT - Legal Responsibilities of Supervision (4 hrs)
  • MGT - Overview of Organizational Support (12 hrs)

  • MGT - Performance Management Coaching/Feedback (6 hrs)
  • MGT - Role of the Manager (7 hrs)

 Essentials of Personal Effectiveness Program

This series provides the foundation for a successful career at Washoe County and is designed for all county employees.   The program includes 8 courses, 44 hours of learning!

  • Customer Service (6 hrs)
  • Excelling in your Career using Emotional Intelligence (6 hrs)

 Essentials of Support Staff Program

Washoe County recognizes the unique role and contribution of Support Staff to the overall success of our organization.  This series provides Support Staff with the tools necessary to excel within Washoe County.  A total of 7 courses and 8 hours of Technology training for a total of 46 hours of learning!

  • Business Writing (6 hrs)
  • Conflict Resolution (6 hrs)
  • Customer Service (6 hrs)
  • Managing & Organizing Your Work (6 hrs)
  • Meeting on Common Ground (4 hrs)
  • Office Protocols (4 hrs)
  • Technology - 8 hours of Technology Training (8 hrs)

 


 Essentials of Train the Trainer Program   

This program is designed for employees with subject matter expertise who provide training in their specific department. The program includes classroom as well as practical application totaling 53 hours.

  • Module 1:  Instructional Systems Design (4 hrs)
  • Module 2:  Presentation Skills (16 hrs)
  • Module 3:  Facilitation Skills (16 hrs)
  • Module 4:  Active & Effective Training (12 hrs)
  • Meeting on Common Ground (4 hrs)
  • Train the Trainer - 1 hours observation (1 hr) 

Essentials of Community Board Membership  

Washoe County recognizes the unique role and contribution of County appointed board and commission members to the overall success of our community.  In an effort to provide a better understanding of the functions of County government and enhance community leadership skills, Washoe County added a new training opportunity—Essentials of Community Board Membership—to its Excellence In Public Service certificate program in January 2011.  This program is offered by the Washoe County Learning Center in collaboration with Washoe County Community Development, Washoe County Community Relations, Washoe County Human Resources, and UNR Cooperative Extension.  After accruing the required 45 hours of classroom training, participants will be presented with a Certificate of Completion by the Washoe County Commission.  Certificate awarded to current members of a county commission appointed board or commission for successful completion of the following essential training courses:

  • Communication Skills (6 hrs)
  • Conflict Resolution (6 hrs)
  • Dealing with Challenging Encounters (6 hrs)
  • Healthy Meetings for Board/Commission Members (2 1/2 hrs)
  • Healthy Team Dynamics (4 hrs)
  • Meeting on Common Ground (4 hrs)
  • Open Meeting Law for Board/Commission Members (1 1/2 hrs)

A total of 15 Hours of training chosen from the following:

  • Customer Service ( 6 hrs)
  • Facilitation Skills (16 hrs)
  • Generations - It's All About Values! (4 hrs)
  • Managing Change (4 hrs)
  • Meeting Management (4 hrs)
  • New Board Member Orientation (up to 2 1/2 hrs)
  • Problem Solving & Decision Makiing (4 hrs)
  • Public Workshops hosted by WC Planning Commission or Board of Adjustments (1 hour workshops - up to a max of 4 hours)
