Reno, Nevada. Nov. 13, 2013.  Following eight public meetings, including three workshops, the Washoe County Commissioners chose to allow Nevada Assembly Bill 46 (AB 46) to expire. During their regularly scheduled meeting Tuesday night, Commissioners directed staff not to revisit the issue prior to the expiration of the bill on Jan. 1, 2014 as provided for in AB 46.

“We have exhausted all the avenues of this issue and spent a large amount of time learning about the capital funding needs from the school district and getting feedback from citizens in many different ways,” said Washoe County Chairman David Humke. “The Commissioners have taken this responsibility very seriously, and we appreciate the opportunity it has allowed the citizens of Washoe County to learn more about our public schools.”

Introduced and approved during the 2013 Nevada Legislative session, AB 46 would have authorized the Washoe County Board of Commissioners to impose additional taxes (one-quarter of 1 percent sales-tax and property tax of 5 cents on each $100 of assessed valuation) for the Washoe County School District capital projects fund.
