Reno, Nevada. July 23, 2014. Bowers Mansion is hosting a big birthday bash to celebrate the Silver State’s 150th. The Nevada Historical Society and Washoe County Parks invite you to join fellow Nevadans in a day of Native American storytelling, games, music, food and Cowboy poetry on the beautiful Bowers Mansion lawn.

The Nevada Proud Pioneer Picnic will showcase our state’s rich heritage and bring you back to Nevada’s pioneer days through a live performance by the riveting Young Chautauquans. You are also welcome to explore the illustrious Bowers Mansion in a self-guided tour and meet several of the descendants of Nevada’s earliest pioneers.

With the completion of the railroad between Virginia City and Reno, and the excitement of the Big Bonanza Boom, people began journeying to the mansion for weekend picnic excursions. One of the groups who met at Bowers annually was the Pacific Coast Pioneers.

Our goal is to bring Bowers back to those days when people surrounded the grounds with their blankets and picnic baskets, so the descendants of our earliest settlers can celebrate just like their families did in the 1800s,” said Tammy Buzick, Bowers Mansion Curator.

When: Saturday, July 26, 2014, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Where: Bowers Mansion at 4005 Old US Highway 395 in Washoe Valley.

Cost: The event is free. Mansion tours cost $5 adults, $3.50 for seniors and kids (6-17)

Reminder: Don’t forget to bring your picnic blankets.

This is an official Nevada 150 event.
