Reno, Nevada. Oct. 15, 2014. Washoe County Senior Services, Access to Healthcare Network and their partners announce a “Medicare 101” Health Fair to kick-off Medicare open enrollment that will help seniors make an informed choice about their health care providers.

This year, Medicare open enrollment runs from Oct. 15 to Dec. 7. Medicare open enrollment is a time when seniors on Medicare can change their Medicare plans. As we know, seniors much purchase additional coverage for the portions of health care that Medicare does not cover, to minimize their out-of-pocket expenses and meet their individual needs.

“The services provided by Medicare health insurers change almost every year. That can be confusing for seniors, which is why Washoe County Senior Services and Access to Health Care Network (ACN) are holding this workshop,” says Dena Miguel, manager for the ACN Senior Health Insurance Program (SHIP).

The Health Fair will be held Friday, Oct. 17, at the Washoe County Senior Center on East Ninth Street and Sutro in Reno.

What: Medicare 101 Workshop and Health Fair

Where: Washoe County Senior Center at 1155 East Ninth Street, Reno.

When: Friday, Oct. 17, from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.

Miguel says seniors may have new information to consider, whether it is a Medicare Managed Care, Medicare Advantage or Medicare Prescription Drug Plan.

The event will include a presentation by the Access to Healthcare Network SHIP program. After the presentation, seniors will have the opportunity to talk with staff and ask questions about Medicare. In addition, most of the local Medicare insurers will be available to answer questions about their services.

“Washoe County Senior Services will have information on Medicare Savings Plans which can assist eligible seniors with paying for Medicare coinsurance, premiums or deductibles. This is a great service which many know little about,” said Washoe County Senior Services Director Grady Tarbutton.

This presentation is done as collaboration between Access to HealthCare Network, a non-profit agency that helps seniors make decision about Medicare Plans and Washoe County Senior Services, an Aging and Disability Resource Information Center, to ensure that seniors receive unbiased information about health care decisions and find plans that meet their individual needs.

In addition to the Health Fair, SHIP will hold workshops and private sessions throughout Washoe County, including at all Washoe County Senior Centers through Dec. 7.
