Reno, Nevada. March, 4, 2015. Washoe County District Attorney Chris Hicks in conjunction with the Reno Police Department is holding a news conference Friday, March 6, 2015, at 10:30 a.m., to address the status of the pending prosecution of Cathy Woods for the 1976 murder of Michelle Mitchell.

The District Attorney’s Office will be discussing the newly discovered DNA evidence which has been linked to another subject along with the continued investigation into the murder of Mitchell.

What: News conference about the murder of Michelle Mitchell.

When: Friday, March 6, 2015 at 10:30 a.m.

Where: Mills B. Lane Justice Center located at 1 South Sierra Street, Reno, Nevada in the Washoe County District Attorney’s 3rd floor Training Room. 

Background info: 19-year-old University of Nevada nursing student Michelle Mitchell was viciously murdered inside a garage near Evans Avenue in Reno on Feb. 24, 1976. In 1979, a former Reno topless bar manager named Cathy Woods confessed to killing Mitchell. Woods was ultimately convicted for the murder in 1980 and sentenced to life in prison. Recently discovered DNA evidence resulted in the Court vacating Woods’ murder conviction and setting the matter for a new trial set to commence in July.
