Juniperus communis/ Juniperus scopulorum
Cupressaceae family

Juniper is another common evergreen and a favorite of landscapers. The defining feature of this genus is the scale or needle-like foliage and the hard, fleshy berries. The main difference between these two species is their habitat. Juniperus communis is a spreading ground cover, while the Juniperus scopulorum is an upright tree.
The berries are edible in very small amounts and are best used as a spice, often as a pepper subsitute. Berries may be
useful in treating insulin dependent diabetes. In addition, leaves and berries are used as a urinary tract disinfectant and diuretic ( i.e. cleanes out your system through urination).
