In accordance with State Law, the Public Administrator may ensure that the property of a deceased person is safeguarded. If the police or coroner cannot immediately locate family when there has been a death, they may request assistance from the Public Administrator`s office. The Public Administrator and staff administer the estates of decedents who have no qualified person willing and able to do so. The Public Administrator. as provided by State law, may make sure that the property of a decedent is secured until a relative or other designated person can claim the property. The Public Administrator should be notified by anyone (Court, coroner, local law enforcement agents, mortuary, convalescent facility, hospital, private citizen) who has knowledge of an estate of a decedent under the following circumstances:


  • Where there are no known heirs.
  • When no executor or administrator has been appointed and as a consequence, the estate, or any part of it, is being wasted, uncared for, or lost.
  • When the named executor of a will fails to act.
  • When the will names the Public Administrator as administrator.
  • When an heir, or heirs, wish to have the Public Administrator administer the estate for them.
